Sheldon hosts 'First Friday' fashion contest
Fashion and art come together at the Sheldon Museum of Art for a fashion contest in celebration of the new exhibition, "The Geometric Unconscious: A Century of Abstraction." The reception is 5 to 7 p.m. today during Sheldon's First Friday reception.
The public is welcome to wear clothing inspired by geometric abstraction. Judges from the UNL Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design will circulate through the crowd from 5 to 6 p.m. Finalists will be judged at 6. Winners will be rewarded with prizes, and the grand prize winner will receive an exhibition catalog. Read more about this event in Today@UNL.

Exhibit to feature Farrell's photos
Great Plains Art Museum will present a new exhibition, "Westward Bound: Big Color Landscape Photographs," by Michael Farrell. The exhibition will run Oct. 5 to Dec. 9 and the artist will be present for a First Friday reception 5-7 p.m. Oct. 5.
Michael Farrell has been practicing his fine art photography for more than 40 years, and his works are included in collections of the Museum of Nebraska Art, the Joslyn Art Museum, and the Great Plains Art Museum. He holds a master's degree from the Institute of Design at Chicago, and has been a resident of Lincoln since 1972. Farrell is television production manager for NET Television and also adjunct faculty in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at UNL. Read more about this exhibit in Today@UNL.

Husker watch party is Oct. 6 in Memorial Stadium
A free football watch party in Memorial Stadium is planned for the Oct. 6 football game between the Huskers and Ohio State University. The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is open to faculty, staff, students and immediate family. Admission is free with a valid NCard.
The game, which kicks off at 7 p.m., will be shown on the jumbo screen in the stadium. Campus NightLife will provide free food and Pepsi products at halftime. The event will also include inflatable games and space to throw footballs. Read more about this party at the Student Involvement website.

'Our Dangerous Universe' lecture is today

Extra-terrestrial events and their consequences for planet Earth will be the focus on this year's Ruckman Lecture at UNL. The public is welcome to this free event Oct. 5 to hear from astrobiophysicist Brian Thomas. He will present "Our Dangerous Universe" at 7:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Auditorium.
Thomas is an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., where he leads an astrobiophysics research group. The group studies the effects on the Earth's atmosphere and biosphere by astrophysical sources of radiation. Thomas also is known for his ability to effectively communicate complex concepts. 'Switch' screening is Friday
A free, public screening of "Switch," a documentary about the energy industry, is 3:30 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Bessey Hall auditorium. The screening is organized by Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and the Conservation and Survey Division of the School of Natural Resources.
The film features and was co-written by Scott Tinker, director of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin. Tinker is an expert on global energy issues and policies. He is also a professor and associate dean of research at UT's School of Geosciences.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced Oct. 4 the appointment of Shawn Eichorst as director of intercollegiate athletics. Eichorst, who has served as director of athletics at the University of Miami since April 2011, will join UNL Oct. 9 as a special assistant to the chancellor. He will succeed Tom Osborne as director of intercollegiate athletics when Osborne becomes athletic director emeritus on Jan. 1.
"After consideration of a large number of candidates, I was impressed with Shawn's credentials and experience but more importantly his respect for and appreciation of the tradition of the Nebraska athletics program," Perlman said. "He expressed from the onset his hope to draw on the experience and knowledge of Tom Osborne and the rest of the current staff in working to continue the department's success both on and off the field." 'Week without Violence' begins Oct. 6
UNL's "Week without Violence" will feature a series of events Oct. 6-19 designed to educate campus and community members and encourage individuals to take a stand against violence.
One in six women become victims of sexual assault and one in four men report experiences of intimate partner violence. Stalking, intimate partner violence and sexual assault affect people of all genders, races, sexual orientations and backgrounds. Read more about Week Without Violence in Today@UNL.

The Internet and Interactive Media group of University Communications and Information Services has concluded the first phase in its effort to provide full support to all devices - desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets - by implementing a suite of web technologies collectively known as 'responsive design.' This week, the internal and external homepages were re-launched as 'responsive' designs.
You can see the effects of responsive design in your desktop browser by simply re-sizing your browser window (the page will reformat as the window is narrowed), or by viewing on your tablet or smartphone.
