Diocles
UNL's Diocles Extreme Light Laboratory, led by Donald Umstadter, is expected to play a role in the new $84 million defense contract with U.S. Strategic Command

NU, StratCom partner on $84M defense contract

An initial contract worth up to $84 million over the next five years will allow University of Nebraska researchers to work on U.S. military projects and could transform the university into a major player in national scientific and medical research.

The contract was announced Oct. 11 by James B. Milliken, NU president; and Gen. C. Robert Kehler, commander of U.S. Strategic Command. The partnership between NU and the United States Strategic Command, based at Offutt Air Force Base, created a University-Affiliated Research Center. The UARC will serve as a primary research and development center that supports U.S. Strategic Command missions to deter and detect strategic attacks against the United States and its allies, and to defend the nation as directed. State pilots group funds tower-safety project

A UNL Extension educator is trying to make the skies a little safer for low-flying area pilots. John Hay's goal is to encourage the wind-energy industry to properly mark its weather towers so pilots can see them. The Nebraska Aviation Trades Association, the professional organization of agricultural pilots in Nebraska, awarded a grant to UNL Extension to support Hay's work.

"This is the first grant that we have provided to UNL, and we are pleased that John Hay's project to encourage the wind energy industry to properly mark weather towers will save pilots' lives," said Brian Wilcox of Tilden, president of NATA. Read more about this grant in Today@UNL.

Study shows childfree women feel most pressure to have kids, but stress least about it

Women who choose to be permanently childfree feel less distress about not having kids than women who are childless from infertility and other reasons, a new national study shows. At the same time, voluntarily childfree women perceive more social pressures to become mothers than women who cannot have children.

"Motherhood is so highly connected with adult femininity in the United States that many women feel that they need to be mothers," said Julia McQuillan, a UNL sociologist and the study's lead author. "Yet we also found that there are women who have low or no distress about not being mothers, even if their friends and family want them to have children." Read more about this study in Today@UNL.

responsive design

The Internet and Interactive Media group of University Communications and Information Services has concluded the first phase in its effort to provide full support to all devices - desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets - by implementing a suite of web technologies collectively known as 'responsive design.' This week, the internal and external homepages were re-launched as 'responsive' designs.

You can see the effects of responsive design in your desktop browser by simply re-sizing your browser window (the page will reformat as the window is narrowed), or by viewing on your tablet or smartphone. Please use the 'feedback' links at the bottom of the page if you would like to let us know of any issues. Thank you.
