Forsberg's 'Lingering Wild' exhibit opens today

Great Plains Art Museum opens the exhibition "Great Plains: America's Lingering Wild" by Michael Forsberg today. The exhibition runs through March 30 and the artist will be present for a First Friday reception 5 to 7 p.m. on March 1.

As a Nebraska native and graduate of UNL with a degree in geography and an emphasis in environmental studies, Forsberg has always had the Great Plains close to his heart and consciousness. The exhibition presents 60 large color photographs from Forsberg's award-winning publication and the recently-released NET documentary, both of the same title. Student qualifies for Hearst championship

Lanny Holstein
Lanny Holstein

UNL student Lanny Holstein will compete in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program National Broadcast Championship in San Francisco in June. Holstein qualified by placing fourth in the Journalism Awards Broadcast News Competition. He will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the College of Journalism and Mass Communications will receive a matching grant.

The junior broadcasting major's winning entries are two news writing long form reports about the 2012 election. The first news story, "Do Political Debates Matter?" asks the question whether a presidential election can be won or lost based on the debates. The second, "Where's the Youth Vote?" examines reasons young voters aren't voting with help from some political experts. Both reports aired on the college's student-run radio station, 90.3 KRNU, as part of election coverage and included the U.S. Senate debates and the presidential and vice-presidential debates. Study: Generational changes cause drop in U.S. support for school prayer

There's a saying that goes, "as long as there are tests, there will be prayer in public schools." At one time, that likely reflected a fairly uniform view about school prayer: that despite what federal law said about the practice, religious Americans by and large approved of it.

A new study by UNL sociologist Philip Schwadel, however, paints a more complicated picture of attitudes toward school prayer over the last four decades, finding sharp differences in school-prayer support between different generations and their religious denominations. National News

UNL nets 300+ positive national news appearances in 2012

UNL made its way into news headlines around the nation regularly in 2012, as national and international media outlets featured and cited the university's research and programming and sought out UNL faculty expertise on a wide range of topics.

More than 310 positive national media appearances, which translated into thousands of news headlines and articles in media outlets across the nation and globe, were registered last year. In 2011, UNL had just over 200 appearances; in 2010 it logged just over 150. Read more about these appearences in Today@UNL.

responsive design

The Internet and Interactive Media group of University Communications and Information Services has concluded the first phase in its effort to provide full support to all devices - desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets - by implementing a suite of web technologies collectively known as 'responsive design.' This week, the internal and external homepages were re-launched as 'responsive' designs.

You can see the effects of responsive design in your desktop browser by simply re-sizing your browser window (the page will reformat as the window is narrowed), or by viewing on your tablet or smartphone. Please use the 'feedback' links at the bottom of the page if you would like to let us know of any issues. Thank you.
