Ice cream flavor contest open to Nebraska students
The UNL Food Processing Center is giving Nebraska high school students the chance to craft a new ice cream flavor. The contest is open to sophomore and junior students, and offers a $1,500 scholarship for the winning flavor. The entry deadline is April 2, with the winner announced by April 30. The award-winning flavor will be featured during the Food Processing Center's 30th anniversary open house on June 9.
The winning student will have the opportunity to visit UNL to participate in the final production run of the winning flavor. The scholarship is contingent on the student enrolling at UNL in a declared food science and technology major. Read more about this contest in Today@UNL.
Six faculty among Gamma Sigma Delta honorees

The Nebraska Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture, added 19 new members and issued awards during an annual banquet Jan. 27.
Gamma Sigma Delta is an international honor society dedicated to recognizing accomplishments in agricultural sciences, natural resources, education and human sciences, and biological systems engineering. UNL Extension's Kayla Hinrichs and Amy Timmerman were the two new faculty members to join the society. Other faculty who received awards during the banquet are Elizabeth Birnstihl, Galen Erickson, Jenny Rees and Madhavan Soundararajan. Read more these honorees in Today@UNL.
Kenyan poet wins Sillerman Prize

Kenyan poet Clifton Gachagua's manuscript, "Madman at Kilifi," has been selected by the African Poetry Book Fund and Series for the Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets. As the winner of the Prize, "Madman at Kilifi" will be among one of the four books to be published by the African Poetry Book Series in 2014.
The Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets is awarded to African poets who have not previously published a book-length collection. The prize includes a $1,000 cash award and publication with the University of Nebraska Press and Amalion Publishing in Senegal. Read more this prize in Today@UNL.
'Gardening at Lunch' webinar series begins today

UNL Extension experts will present five webinars to discuss and answer questions on various gardening topics. The series, "Gardening at Lunch" opens Feb. 6 with a presentation on pruning.
Each hour-long session starts at noon and are offered once a month. Cost is $10 per session. Read more about this series in Today@UNL.
Registration open for African American Domestic Violence conference
The seventh annual Nebraska African American Domestic Violence Action Committee Conference is 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the East Union. The conference is free and open to faculty, staff and students. Registration is required. The conference theme is "Fathers Matter: Domestic Violence in the African American/Black Community." The plenary speaker is Johnnie Rice II, a senior program associate with the Vera Institute for Justice.
Rice has worked to address family violence, serving in a variety of roles for nationally recognized domestic-violence entities, including contributing to the development of the Safe Havens Supervised Visitation Grant Program Guiding Principles. Rice has a long history of working with low-income fathers and families, focusing on responsible fatherhood and on enhancing their stability and the safety of the communities they live in. He has provided oversight for statewide domestic violence efforts through the Victims of Crime Assistance Program, the Domestic Violence Program, and Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Program. Nominees sought for chancellor's GLBT award
Nominations are being accepted for the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community. The awards are given annually in two categories: faculty/staff and student.
The awards formally recognize efforts to create an inclusive, respectful and safe climate for members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community at UNL. The efforts may be by an individual, an organization or department with the university. The award recipient must demonstrate a sustained and tangible impact on the campus community. Spring Career Fair continues
More than 200 employers will attend the two-day Spring Career Fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Nebraska Union. The career fair will include internship and full-time opportunities in all career fields. The event is open to all UNL faculty, staff, students and alumni.
The Feb. 6 fair is for careers in business, service, government and the liberal arts. For more information, go to the Career Services website.

The Internet and Interactive Media group of University Communications and Information Services has concluded the first phase in its effort to provide full support to all devices - desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets - by implementing a suite of web technologies collectively known as 'responsive design.' Recently, the internal and external homepages were re-launched as 'responsive' designs.
You can see the effects of responsive design in your desktop browser by simply re-sizing your browser window (the page will reformat as the window is narrowed), or by viewing on your tablet or smartphone.
