Annual Japan Festival is today

UNL's annual Japan Festival is today, March 28. The free and open to the public event includes a culture presentation, calligraphy workshop and a screening of the film "Jiro Dreams of Sushi."

The festival opens with a presentation that includes demonstration of seasonal Japanese activities and a game show with audience participation. "Culture Presentation: Four Seasons and a Jeopardy Game" begins at 3:45 p.m. in the Nebraska Union's Centennial Room. Read more about this festival in Today@UNL.

Neale to discuss technology to map, monitor irrigated land

In recent years, technological breakthroughs have greatly enhanced the ability to map and monitor irrigated agricultural lands. Those advancements will be featured in a 10 a.m. seminar led by Christopher Neale.

Neale is a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Utah State University. His presentation, "Geospatial Technologies for Mapping and Monitoring Irrigated Agricultural Areas," is free and open to the public. The seminar, which is in 150 Keim Hall, is sponsored by the Daugherty Water for Food Institute. Read more about this seminar in Today@UNL.

 

Buros Center hosts 'Big Issues in Testing' conference

The Buros Center for Testing, part of the College of Education and Human Sciences, is hosting a national conference March 28-29 in Lincoln.

"Big Issues in Testing: Improving Admissions and Learning in Higher Education" will feature speakers from eight Big Ten universities. The conference will examine the assessment process used to admit students in undergraduate and graduate programs and how higher education assesses student-learning progress. 'Global Ireland' panel, reading are today

Prairie Schooner, UNL's literary journal, will host events promoting "Global Ireland" on March 28. The day will feature a panel discussion and a reading with Irish and Irish-American poets Eamonn Wall, Drucilla Wall and Ray McManus. Both events are free and open to the public.

The Global Ireland panel is 1-2 p.m. in the Dudley Bailey Library, 228 Andrews Hall. The writers will participate in a poetry reading at 7:30 p.m. at the Great Plains Art Museum. Read more about these authors and events in Today@UNL.

'Entrepreneuring Days' winners announced

The Center for Entrepreneurship in the College of Business Administration hosted EntrepreneuringDays @UNL March 11-13 at the Embassy Suites, 1040 P St.

The event included two student competitions — the UNL New Venture Competition open to University of Nebraska students and the UNL Global New Venture Competition open to students from around the world. The UNL New Venture Competition provided students the opportunity to compete in a business planning competition to get feedback and financing for their idea. The grand prize of $50,000 must be used to start the business pitched in the competition. The grand prize winning team was entered into the UNL Global New Venture Competition. UPC presentation to feature Zach Wahls

The University Program Council presents "What Makes a Family?" with Zach Wahls at 7:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Auditorium. Admission is free for UNL students (with a valid NCard) and $5 for all others.

Wahls is best known for the viral YouTube video, "Zach Wahls Speaks about Family," in which he spoke at a public forum on House Joint Resolution 6, an amendment intended to ban gay marriage, in front of the Iowa House of Representatives. Because of the video, Wahls has become a nationally recognized advocate for LGBT equality. Wahls will share his story and the stories of similar families across the country.

Sturm, Larson featured in jazz recital

Hans Sturm and Tom Larson will perform a duo recital of original jazz works at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets, available at the door one hour before the performance, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

Sturm is an assistant professor of double bass and jazz studies. Larson is an adjunct lecturer of music history and jazz studies.
