Knight Foundation awards $250K to journalism duo
The study of two innovative areas of journalism — mobile media and drone journalism — in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications has received backing from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation with grants totaling $250,000 to the University of Nebraska Foundation.
A $200,000 grant was awarded to help create a Mobile Media Lab. Led by Gary Kebbel, professor of journalism and mass communications, the lab will involve cross-campus, multidisciplinary collaboration of students, faculty and research professors working to improve the communication of news and advertising on mobile devices. World Food Prize winner to give Heuermann Lecture

"The Global Food System and Related Policy Challenges" is the topic when World Food Prize Laureate Per Pinstrup-Andersen presents the Heuermann Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hardin Hall auditorium.
Pinstrup-Andersen, World Food Prize Laureate in 2001, is the H.E. Babcock Professor of Food, Nutrition and Public Policy, the J. Thomas Clark Professor of Entrepreneurship and a professor of applied economics at Cornell University. He also is an adjunct professor of food economics at the University of Copenhagen. Mislevy to discuss assessment design

Robert Mislevy, a research chair at Educational Testing Service based in Princeton, NJ, will present his talk, "Some Conceptions about Evidence-Centered Assessment Design," from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in room 139 Teachers College Hall. A reception will follow the talk in the Buros Center for Testing library.
Mislevy is the Frederic M. Lord Chair in Measurement and Statistics at ETS. He was previously professor of measurement and statistics at the University of Maryland and affiliate professor of survey methods and of second language acquisition. He has received numerous awards for his work in the field of educational research and assessment and is a past-president of the Psychometric Society and a member of the National Academy of Education. Jack Hoffman 69-yard TD No. 1 'Favorite' on YouTube Trends
The Huskers.com video of 7-year-old RB Jack Hoffman's 69-yard run in Saturday's Spring Game is among YouTube's top trending videos for today, with over 2 million views at last check.
Hoffman, a pediatric brain cancer patient, began his relationship with the Huskers through the Athletic Department's Life Skills program. Read more about Jack Hoffman.

History Harvest Blitz Week opens April 8
Organizers of UNL's History Harvest are planning a weeklong social media event to generate ideas on how to propel the program nationwide. The History Harvest Blitz Week is April 8-12. The event will allow individuals to discuss the project - which archives historical artifacts into a digital database - through Twitter, the History Harvest blog and a Google Hangout.
"The real purpose of this project is to help us create interest and energy around the History Harvest concept and spread it nationwide in a coordinated manner," said Will Thomas, professor of history. "Anyone can run a history harvest anywhere. We just want to find a way to coordinate the activities and create a single digital archive for the results." Gaughan Week events include Step Afrika! performance
UNL is celebrating multiculturalism and inclusion through a series of events organized by the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. The events run through April 12.

Woollam receives national physics prize

John Woollam, professor of electrical engineering, received the 2013 Prize for Industrial Application of Physics from the American Physical Society. The award was presented during the society's March 18-22 meeting in Baltimore.
The purpose of the prize is to recognize excellence in the industrial application of physics, publicize the value of physics in industry, encourage physics research in industry, and enhance students' awareness of and interest in the role of physics in commercial product development.
