UNL graduate student wins a Fulbright to Germany

Amy Millspaugh, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate student, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in Germany. She is earning masters degrees in German and Education at UNL and will leave in the fall to travel to Germany to begin a nine-month English teaching assistantship.

About 8,000 grants are awarded annually, and about 1,600 of those grants are awarded to U.S. students. Originally from Appleton, Wisc., Millspaugh came to UNL to study dance but discovered her passion was the German language. She graduated from the University in December 2011 with a triple major in German, English, and Education. Read more about Millspaugh and this Fulbright in Today@UNL.

University Theatre completes spring semester season with Shakespeare

University Theatre, the academic-year production program at UNL, will close its 2012-13 season with a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." Productions at at 7:30 p.m. on April 11, 12, 13 and 17, 18, 19 and 20, and 2 p.m. April 21 in Howell Theatre, on the first floor of the Temple Building at 12th and R streets.

Tickets are available at the Lied Center Ticket Office at 301 N. 12th St. or 402-472-4747 or 800-432-3231 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets are $16, $14 for faculty,staff and senior citizens and $10 for students with valid ID. Read more about this performance in Today@UNL.

Lecture to look at the math behind card game

SET cards

Mathematics graduate student Kathryn Haymaker will give a presentation at 5 p.m. about the mathematics behind the famous card game SET. The lecture will take place in Avery Hall Room 106.

SET was designed in 1974. It evolved out of a coding system that its designer used in her job as a geneticist. SET won American Mensa's Select award in 1991. Read more about this lecture in Today@UNL.

 

Registration opens for Nebraska Gateway to Nutrigenomics Spring Retreat

Registration for the fifth annual Nebraska Gateway to Nutrigenomics Spring Retreat, which will be held May 13, is now open. This year's retreat, "Future Leaders in Nutrigenomics," will feature five exceptionally productive future leaders in nutrigenomics in early stages of their careers plus keynote speaker Margherita Cantorna from Penn State University.

The event is free and open to all faculty, students, postdocs, staff, industry partners, and other interested parties. However, space is limited and online registration by May 6 is required. Read more about this retreat in Today@UNL.

Spring UNL Research Fair Continues

The 2013 Spring UNL Research Fair will take place April 10-11 in the Nebraska Union. The fair showcases undergraduate and graduate student research and creative activity accomplishments at UNL.

Architecture hosts exhibition about suburban/rural edge

The College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present a new exhibition, "Shifting Thresholds," April 11-18, with an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on April 11.

Visitors will view the first phase of work on "Shifting Thresholds," a unique undertaking investigating the relationships among people, land, history, ownership, agriculture and development at the suburban/rural edge between Omaha and Sarpy County. Read more about this exhibition in Today@UNL.
