Music to celebrate Verdi's birth with 'Requiem'
About 350 members of the UNL Symphony Orchestra and combined choruses will perform Giuseppe Verdi's "Requiem" at 7:30 p.m. April 27 in the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The performance is in honor of the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students/seniors and are available from the Lied Center Box Office at 402-472-4747. Read more about this performance in Today@UNL.

Land Institute founder's talk is today

A lecture by Wes Jackson, founder of the Land Institute, is 10 a.m. April 26 in the Great Plains Art Museum. The talk, "The Future of Ecosystem-Based Agriculture," is free and open to the public. He will address public policy for land use in the Plains in the context of how the history and cultures of the region intersect with biology to shape our decisions.
Life Magazine predicted that Jackson would be among the 100 "most important Americans of the 20th century," a listing based on his work since founding The Land Institute. Read more about this talk in Today@UNL.

Spring Affair plant sale is Saturday
Spring Affair, the Midwest's largest gardening event, is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27 at the Lancaster Event Center. More than 500 different varieties of plants will be offered at the daylong plant sale. The event also includes educational talks. The event theme, "For This Place," reflects the need for regionally appropriate planting, said Kim Todd, UNL Extension horticulture specialist.
Plants are selected for regional suitability, uniqueness, and demand. They are provided by Bluebird Nursery of Clarkson. Read more about Spring Affair in Today@UNL.

Landscape Services, ASUN team up for Arbor Day planting
UNL is celebrating Arbor Day with a tree-planting at 10 a.m. April 26, south of the Beadle Center, near 19th and R streets. Landscape Services and more than 20 students will plant the trees as part of Focus Nebraska, a weeklong event that promotes environmental sustainability, awareness, engagement and activism.
Focus Nebraska is organized by the Association of Students at the University of Nebraska's Sustainability Committee.

Huskers host 'World's Largest Tailgate' Saturday
The Huskers will host the second annual "World's Largest Softball Tailgate" before the April 27 game with defending Big Ten champion Michigan at Bowlin Stadium. The event begins at 10 a.m. with first pitch at 1 p.m. Both the tailgate and game are free.
The tailgate and game drew 1,752 fans in 2012. The Huskers' goal is to have more than 2,000 fans attend the April 27 event. Read more about this event in Today@UNL.

Annual student art sales are April 26-27
The annual sales of the UNL Clay Club and Lincoln Print Group are April 26-27 in Richards Hall. The Clay Club spring sale and raffle is in 118 Richards Hall. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 26 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27. The Lincoln Print Group's annual Fine Art Print Sale is in 121 Richards Hall. The sale is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
Ceramic works will be available for purchase. Raffle tickets can be purchased to win donated pieces made by students and faculty in the Department of Art and Art History. Etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, screen prints, artist books and more will be available at the print sale. Faculty and graduate work will also be raffled. Read more about these sales in Today@UNL.

Gift sets Lied's Johnny Carson Theater for renovation
The $571,500 renovation project, including a completely redesigned entrance and lobby and new theater floor, is being made possible with a gift from the John W. Carson Foundation. The university announced the gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation’s Campaign for Nebraska during a celebration at the Carson Theater on April 26.

Symposium to examine the genetic science behind addiction
Many people use substances, but a relatively small percentage develop substance use disorders. Why this happens is an active area of research that will be explored April 25-26 at the 61st annual Nebraska Symposium on Motivation at UNL.
The symposium's theme this year is "Genes and the Motivation to Use Substances." Six experts will present research findings on various topics on the motivation of substance use and addictive behavior. Scott Stoltenberg, assistant professor of psychology at UNL, is coordinating the symposium. He said the long-running symposium looks motivation's role in human behavior and this year will delve into the incentives to use substances and the risks of developing a disorder.
