Fulbright award funds youth photo exhibit
A doctoral student's Fulbright award helped fund "Land in Focus," a University of Nebraska State Museum exhibition featuring photos of six Lincoln-area youth.
The exhibit was curated by doctoral student Victoria Chraibi in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Lincoln, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and UNL doctoral fellows in the National Science Foundation Integrated Graduate Education and Research Training program. The interactive exhibit showcases the connections urban youth were able to make to the natural world through creativity and inter-generational storytelling. The project was funded by a grant Chraibi received from the Fulbright Canada-RBC Eco-Leadership Program. "Land in Focus" is on display through Sept. 30. Researcher assists in particle decay discovery at CERN
With the discovery of a rare particle decay at the CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, physicists have a new incentive to continue exploration of the standard model of particle physics — and campus scientists had a direct hand in the discovery. Jose Lazo-Flores, a postdoctoral researcher with UNL's high energy physics group, is stationed at CERN and helped analyze the data amassed as physicists observed a rare particle decay that had been sought for more than a quarter-century.
The observation follows last summer's discovery at CERN of the long-theorized Higgs boson particle and helps explain the origin of particle masses and the early universe. Read more about this research in Today@UNL.
Research seeks proposals for NIH program
The Office of Research and Economic Development is sponsoring an internal competition to identify the team that will develop the UNL proposal that will be submitted to NIH's Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) program in early 2014.
NIH allows only one application per institution per fiscal year. Faculty interested in developing a COBRE application must submit an expression of interest by Aug. 12, as well as an internal pre-proposal by Sept. 16.
The COBRE program is designed to strengthen an institution's biomedical research infrastructure by establishing an interdisciplinary, and sometimes multi-institutional, center and enhancing the ability of early-career investigators to secure independent external research funding. This program currently funds UNL's Nebraska Center for Virology and Redox Biology Center. Read more about this program in Today@UNL.
