Sheldon reopens permanent collection galleries with exhibit of iconic works

The Sheldon Museum of Art at UNL will reopen its permanent collection galleries at 5 p.m. Aug. 2 with an exhibition titled "Painting -- From the Collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art," featuring some of its most beloved and iconic paintings.

The exhibition will include 19th-century masterpieces by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent and Benjamin West; iconic pictures by 20th-century artists such as Edward Hopper, Lee Krasner, Barnett Newman, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Joseph Stella and Andy Warhol; and paintings by both emerging artists and giants in the contemporary field, including Juane Quick-to-See-Smith, Ed Ruscha, Hung Liu, Patssi Valdez and William T. Rural Futures Institute names director finalists

Following a national search, the University of Nebraska on Monday announced the finalists for the position of founding executive director of the Rural Futures Institute, a university-wide research, education, policy and engagement institute focused on rural growth and development in Nebraska and beyond.

The finalists will visit Nebraska for interviews and meetings with university and community stakeholders beginning next month. Each finalist will give a public presentation -- accessible both in-person and on the web -- during which time those interested can learn about his vision for the institute. Kinsler picked to lead quilt study center

Alice Kinsler has been named interim executive director of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum. Kinsler assumes the post Aug. 5.

"It's an incredible honor to serve as the interim executive director of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum and to help with the search for a permanent full-time executive director," Kinsler said. The search for a permanent director is led by Michael James, professor and chair of textiles, merchandising and fashion design. Read more about Kinsler in Today@UNL.

 

Project to temporarily close part of East Campus Loop

A section along the south side of the East Campus Loop Road will close for maintenance on July 31. The project, between 35th Street and Dairy Store Drive, will last for about 10 days.

East Campus entrances at 35th Street and Dairy Store Drive will remain open during construction.

John P. Carroll

Carroll to begin tenure as SNR head

UNL's School of Natural Resources welcomes its new director, John P. Carroll, on Thursday (Aug. 1).

Carroll, who comes to UNL from the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia, said he plans to make time over the next few months to meet with small groups of students, staff and faculty and to get to know faces and names. Dean's Days continue this week

Office of Admissions recruitment staff are embarking on a fact-finding mission across campus.

Continuing this week, Admissions will offer Dean's Days at UNL's colleges and the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center. The goal is to help recruitment staff learn more about academic opportunities on campus.

Dean's Days are hosted at the respective college. Meeting room information will be available at the Dean's Days website.

 

Portnoy helps train psych supervisors in China

A program led by Bob Portnoy is on course to double the number of credentialed psychology supervisors in China within two years. Portnoy, director of counseling and psychological services at the University Health Center, developed the project as a Fulbright scholar based at China's Nanjing University in 2011-12.

"During my Fulbright year, I had a lot of discussions with mental health professionals and clinicians about how does the field of psychotherapy move forward in China," Portnoy said. "I argued that what they really needed is a group of folks who are strong supervisors who can teach the next generation of therapists." Read more about Carroll in Today@UNL.

 

Global Engagement grant to bring African students to UNL

Thanks to a grant from the State Department, 20 of the best and brightest African students will spend four weeks in January in focused classes and activities at UNL related to American government, politics, civic engagement and community service.

The $216,000 grant was secured by Patrice McMahon, director of Global Engagement, and Linda Major, director of the Center for Civic Engagement, to host a winter U.S. Institute on Civic Engagement. Read more about this grant in Today@UNL.
