Proposals sought for first-year learning communities
UNL's learning communities program is accepting proposals from campus departments/programs for the creation of first-year learning communities to begin in the 2014-15 academic year.
First-year learning communities are a means of support for students as they navigate the academic and social transitions to college life. During the 2013-14 year, approximately 12 percent of the freshman class will be involved in one of 22 first-year learning communities. Read more about submitting a proposal in Today@UNL.

College of Law to launch doctorate in space law
The College of Law will open a new frontier in space law by launching a doctorate of juridicial sciences degree program later this month. For the past five years, UNL has been the only law college in the nation to offer an LL.M., or Master of Laws, degree in space, cyber and telecommunications law. Graduates of the one-year program have gone on to careers working for private companies like SpaceX; for civilian agencies like the State Department and NASA Jet Propulsion Lab; for military operations such as the U.S. Cyber Command and Space Operations at Vandenberg Air Force Base; as well as for think tanks, consultants and law firms.
Going forward, UNL will be the only U.S. law school to offer both a master's and doctorate in space law. The doctorate program has been offered online since the 2012-13 academic year. Read more about this program in Today@UNL.

Study explores how children of gay parents overcome stigma
How do children of gay and lesbian parents create a positive family identity in a culture where negative messages can drown others out and tell them their family dynamic is wrong? A forthcoming study by Diana Breshears and Dawn O. Braithwaite provides clues into how those children can solidify a positive family identity.
Through in-depth interviews with people whose parents came out as gay or lesbian to their children at various ages, Braithwaite, UNL professor and chair of communication studies, and Breshears, of the University of Pretoria in South Africa, found that children of gay parents overcame stigmatization through suppressing negative messages and using positive language when speaking of their family dynamics. UNLedu 4.0 Go-Live Date Under Review
In order to optimize coordination across campus on the launch of UNLedu 4.0, the previously-announced August 12 release date for the UNLedu 4.0 Web Framework (the 'templates' ) upgrade is under review.
No sites other than those specifically authorized in writing by the Director of University Communications may be launched in the UNLedu 4.0 templates at this time. The sole exception is the Web Developer Network site, which -- for testing purposes and by tradition -- is a live site published in the latest codebase during each template transition. Discussions regarding a new deployment schedule are ongoing and will be communicated early in the fall semester.
Read more about UNLedu 4.0, which builds upon last years 'responsive' web technology release (3.1) and includes significant improvements in support for widescreen displays. On top of a strong base of valid markup, and in compliance with federal standards for accessibility, the UNLedu Web Framework includes built-in features such as integrated site and directory search, single sign-on authentication and user profiles, emergency alerts, news and events feeds, and a constituent chat service.
