Meet Senior Jacob Byrne, a Communication Studies Major and History Minor! On what he likes about the Communication Studies major: "There are so many different classes that develop different skills in different areas that I can truly make my degree mine. This makes me more marketable to future employers."
How did you find Communication Studies?
I found Communication Studies through my ACE classes. I was looking for a new major and I took Comm 286 for ACE credit. Through that class I learned more about the Communication Studies major and found my interest in interviewing and community engagement.
What do you like most about the Communication Studies major?
I enjoy the ability to make my degree unique. There are so many different classes that develop different skills in different areas that I can truly make my degree mine. This makes me more marketable to future employers because I am different than other Communication majors and other people in different majors.
What is your favorite class?
Comm 325 Interviewing, this class teaches you the skill of interviewing. I got to learn the different types of interviews and how to word interview questions to accomplish a goal. This not only helps me market myself in the job market, but it helped me in other classes and other activities.
What cool experiences have you had as an undergraduate at UNL?
During my time as an undergraduate I have done many different volunteering events like the Big Event on campus to Cancer walks. Most of my undergraduate life I have been a teller at Lincoln Federal Savings Bank. I have enjoyed growing professionally in the customer service field as well as the world of banking. Recently I have spent my time volunteer coaching basketball to 4th and 5th graders.
What are your plans post-graduation?
After graduation in December I will be moving out to the Holdrege, Nebraska area and will marry my college girlfriend. There we will start our family and I will be looking for management positions in either the medical or sales fields.
