UAAD members are invited to this free workshop! Learn how to enhance your business writing to increase efficiency and to ensure your messages are effective. Workshop will be held Thursday, Feb. 18 from 12:00-4:00pm at the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. RSVP required - http://ow.ly/Y0BMm

In this new era of 140-character tweets and cute emoticons, is proper business writing still important?

Consider these examples:

After General Electric revised a software manual, customer calls and messages to their support team dropped by 125 calls per month. They estimated a savings of $375,000 per year for every single customer with the revised manual.

When the U.S. Army tested two versions of a business message asking the reader to perform a specific task, those who received a well-written, “high impact” letter were twice as likely to complete the task on the same day they received it.

Effective business writing is a vital part of communicating any organization’s goals, and every employee plays a part in this process. In this workshop, we will explore ways to enhance our business writing to increase work efficiency and to ensure our messages are effective and meaningful to our readers. We will focus specifically on appropriate writing for email, how to tailor our messages to our various audiences, and the different approaches we can use depending on the subject. Hopefully once completed, you will feel more confident in your business writing and armed with useful tips and tricks for future messages.

This workshop will be presented by J.S. Engebretson, the communications and marketing manager for the College of Engineering. She also serves as an adjunct instructor for the Doane College Lincoln Campus for the past eight years, primarily teaching Business Writing for undergraduate students.
