This course was very recently approved for ACE 7/9. Prerequisite is sophomore standing or above.
Class will meet Tuesday/Thursday 12:30-1:45pm in Westbrook 114.
Next offering will be Spring 2022.

Course Description
Examination of the relationship between music and political/social change in Latin America during the 20th century. Develops an understanding of the music and its significance to historical context. Connects musical traditions with trends in the modern world, in the United States and abroad.

Course Objectives
Through participation in the course, students will:
1. Understand the role and significance of protest music in the Latin American political landscape;
2. be able to identify the major musical protest movements of the 20th and 21st centuries, and the artists associated with each movement;
3. be able to connect musical movements discussed in class to their root folk music traditions;
4. gain understanding of how music can affect political and social consciousness; and
5. use the preceding skills to develop perspectives on modern Latin American politics through modern artists’ musical expressions.
