Be a Career Advocate for Students in Your Circle!

Nebraska students can start developing their careers from the first day the step on campus and you can help! There are a lot of opportunities to be a Career Advocate for the students you interact with and advise.
Here are three simple things you might encourage students to do as they return to school to promote their career development:
- Meet with a Career Advisor in a scheduled appointment: Through MyPlan, students can schedule virtual and/or phone appointments with Career Coaches/Advisors in their college. If they are not sure who that is, they can reach out to University Career Services at 402.472.3145 or careerservices@unl.edu and we will connect them to their career coaching staff.
- Activate and/or update their Handshake profile: Handshake is UNL’s connection point for students and opportunities – and students with 100% complete profiles are 5-7 times more likely to be contacted by an employer, so encourage students to update it early and often! As an Advisor, you are also invited to have a Handshake to support your advising. Contact us at careerservices@unl.edu for more info!
- Attend career fairs and events: Career Services offers numerous Career Fairs throughout the year, creating a place for students to connect with opportunities such as jobs and internships and to explore and learn about career paths. This fall, events will be moved online and take place through tools like Handshake and Zoom. As an advisor, you are also invited and encouraged to attend fairs and events.
We all can support Nebraska students’ career development. If you know someone you know is making a difference in UNL student career development, including yourself, we would love to hear about it. Nominate a Career Connector so we can celebrate and share! Email Amber Pape for more information at apape2@unl.edu.
