Emerging Leaders Program
Emerging Leaders Program

For over a decade, NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising has run the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) to increase the diversity of leaders in the Association. Each year, 10 leaders and 10 mentors are selected for a two-year program that involves intentional mentorship, goal-setting, networking with other leaders and mentors, and financial assistance for attendance at NACADA events. ELP participants have received support for a variety of goals. Some of these have included research projects and publications, conference presentations (regional, annual, international), and leadership roles throughout the association. ELP graduates have become NACADA board members and presidents, led conference committees, and chaired standing committees and advising communities.

Advisors interested in being an Emerging Leader must complete an application online. Applicants must have been a NACADA member for two or more years and demonstrate their increasing involvement over time, describing in their application how they would bring diversity to NACADA’s leadership and how participation in the ELP program would allow them to deepen their involvement in the Association further. Applicants must agree to participate in the full program over two years, including regular meetings via Zoom. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of support from a supervisor or senior advising administrator indicating support for the time required to participate in the program. Full details are available on the NACADA ELP website.

Advisors who have been involved in NACADA can also apply to serve as a mentor to an Emerging Leader. Mentors will also take part in the orientation session, will be matched with an Emerging Leader, and will be expected to provide ongoing mentorship during the program, including regular meetings with their Emerging Leader.

CJ Venable, Training and Professional Development Specialist for University Advising, participated in ELP as an Emerging Leader in the 2017-2019 Class. Matched with Dr. Jennifer Joslin, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Director of the Robert and Mary Cox Compass Center at Drury University, CJ was able to learn more about the pathways for leadership within NACADA and opportunities to pursue scholarly writing and publication in academic advising. As a result, CJ published “Philosopher-Kings and Academic Advisers: Learning from The Republic” in The Mentor: Innovative Scholarship on Academic Advising and presented with Dr. Joslin on trans equity and advising at the 2019 Annual conference. CJ was able to use the financial support from ELP to be able to attend two Annual Conferences and one Region 5 Conference during their ELP term. After graduating from ELP, CJ was elected to be the 2019-2021 Chair of the Theory, Philosophy, and History of Advising Community. Interested in learning more or have questions for CJ? They can be contacted at cj.venable@unl.edu.

Applications for both Emerging Leaders and mentors remain open until March 15th, 2021.
