Recent Updates in Policies and Practices Concerning Gender Identity On Campus

Please check out the following information about the changes on campus (and system-wide) regarding preferred/chosen name and changing sex/gender marker on records.

Gender Inclusive Housing: This fall a gender inclusive housing option was made available to students at UNL. The option has been very popular with students. Given the popularity, Housing will be setting aside twice the amount of space for GIH for next year.

Chosen/Preferred Name: Any student who goes by a chosen or preferred name (other than their legal name) is able to fill out a preferred name form at the Registrar’s Office in Canfield 107, show their legal ID, and their preferred/chosen name will show up on class and grade rosters, in the UNL Directory, and on Blackboard. The N card is working to implement an option where the preferred name will be on the front of the ID card, with the legal name on the back. Diplomas may have a different name that is easily associated with your legal name (e.g., Charles can be Chuck or Samantha can be same but Jennifer cannot be David). The changes should take place within one week.

Legal Name Change: In order to change the primary name (legal name) in the system, the University will require one of the following:
• Current Driver’s License
• Social Security card
• Marriage License
• Passport
• Divorce Decree
• Court Order
The requirements for change of primary name (legal name) will not change from the current practice.

Sex/Gender Marker on Records: A system-wide policy has been approved that will allow students to change their sex/gender marker on their records using their changed driver’s license or passport.
