New Field School: Blackfriary Archaeology in Ireland

Since 2010 the BAFS have been undertaking an archaeological research and teaching dig at the Black Friary, in the medieval town of Trim, in the heart of the Boyne Valley, Ireland. The excavations are revealing the buried ruins of a Dominican friary founded in 1263 by Geoffrey de Geneville and are providing a wondering insight into monastic life and death in medieval Ireland.

The dig is the cornerstone of the multi-award winning Blackfriary Community Heritage and Archaeology Project, working hand in hand with the local community and transforming this once derelict site into a wonderful amenity space and future resource for the townspeople.
