Carson Center’s Smith part of Exhibit Columbus Symposium New Middles

Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Arts Ash E. Smith is part of the Exhibit Columbus Symposium New Middles, which kicked off Sept. 15 and runs through Oct. 27.

The symposium gathers national and international thought leaders in architecture, art, design and landscape architecture, together with Columbus, Indiana, stakeholders to explore the question: What is the Future of The Middle City? The symposium will consider the role of design and architecture in making civic change at a time when many pressing issues are affecting communities, including public health, climate change, equity and social justice, and emergent technologies.

The symposium consists of a series of free online conversations and events, including Thematic Conversations, presented in partnership with Dezeen, and Columbus Conversations with ongoing public engagement taking place every other week from Sept. 15-Oct. 27.

Thematic conversations will be live streamed and recorded on Tuesdays at https://www.dezeen.com/exhibit-columbus/. Columbus Conversations will be live streamed and recorded on Thursdays through Exhibit Columbus on Zoom and Facebook Live.

Smith will be part of the symposium titled “Indigenous Futures and Radical Thinking” on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. CDT and Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. CDT.

Week 2: Resiliency and Climate Adaptation
Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. CDT and Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. CDT
Featuring: Inaki Alday (Tulane University) and Kate Orff (SCAPE in New York City). Moderated by Iker Gil, 2020-2021 Curator, Exhibit Columbus.

Week 3: Arts and Community
Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. CDT and Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. CDT
Featuring Paola Aguirre (Borderless Studio, Chicago) and De Nichols, Civic Creatives, St. Louis). Moderated by Anne Surak, Director, Exhibit Columbus.

Week 4: Indigenous Futures and Radical Thinking
Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. CDT and Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. CDT
