A new ceramic sculpture, titled “Heritage,” created by Professor Emeritus of Art Eddie Dominguez, will be unveiled during a public dedication event on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 4:30 p.m. with remarks beginning at 5 p.m. followed by the sculpture’s unveiling at the Loren C. Eiseley Branch Library.
Public Art Lincoln and Lincoln City Libraries joined forces to bring the public art sculpture to the library, which is located at 1530 Superior St. in Lincoln.
“Heritage” is a ceramic carved torso that incorporates imagery and symbolism representing family and landscapes. Its colors and visual elements are inspired by Dominguez's New Mexican roots and Nebraska resettlement, offering viewers a deep connection to his heritage. The sculpture is on loan to the City of Lincoln through an agreement with the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA), located in Kearney, Nebraska.
Dominguez is a prominent ceramicist and retired educator. He taught ceramics and sculpture for 25 years at UNL, retiring in 2024. Born in Tucumcari, New Mexico, in 1957, Dominguez earned his B.F.A. in Ceramics from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1981 and his M.F.A. in 1983 from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. His career spans over four decades, during which he has earned numerous accolades, including the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts (2006) and a Distinguished Professor Grant from New Mexico Highlands University (2008).
Dominguez's artwork has been shown in more than 45 solo exhibitions and more than 150 group exhibitions, and his pieces are held in more than 35 public and private collections across the United States. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Cooper-Hewitt, the Renwick Gallery, The Sheldon Memorial Art Museum, The Museum of Nebraska Art, The Albuquerque Museum of Fine Arts, The Santa Few Museum of Fine Arts, Detroit Art Institute and many other galleries and private collections.
This collaborative installation represents a significant milestone in integrating public art with community spaces in Lincoln. The event is free, and community members are encouraged to attend.
