Jazz Saxophonist Bergonzi coming to Korff School

The Jazz Studies Area of the Glenn Korff School of Music is welcoming to campus a living legend of the tenor saxophone, Jerry Bergonzi.

Thanks to the support of Chateau Development, L.L.C., Bergonzi will be participating in a clinic on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 4:30 p.m. in Westbrook Music Building Rm. 119. He will also be featured at the Faculty Jazz Concert on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Westbrook Recital Hall Rm. 119. Both events are free and open to the public.

Bergonzi has performed throughout the world at all the major jazz festivals and jazz venues, both with his own ensembles, as well as numerous jazz greats. His music is renowned for its innovation, mastery and integrity.

His discography includes more than 60 recordings, notably Standard Gonz with the Jerry Bergonzi Quartet on the Blue Note Label. He also has 60 recorded song titles registered with ASCAP.

As a clinician, Bergonzi has taught at conservatories and music schools throughout the U.S. and Europe. He is the author of a series of instructional books with play-along CDs and videos titled "Inside Improvisation," published by Advance Music, as well as the book/CD set titled "Sound Advice."

He is the founder of Not Fat Records (six releases to date) and has recordings on Blue Note, Red, Not Fat, Concord, Atlantic, Columbia and more.

Bergonzi is a three-time National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from the University of Lowell.

Comprised of the some of the nation’s finest performers and educators, the UNL Faculty Jazz Ensemble drew national attention in 2010 with their appearance on the NET Television and Glenn Korff School of Music program "Jazz Cabaret," which has been viewed by millions. The program captured the versatility and creativity audiences have come to expect from the group.

From unique arrangements of jazz and popular standards to original works, the UNL Faculty Jazz Ensemble present a varied and exciting program. Active as clinicians and educators the group brings its “Mobile Jazz Classroom” to schools throughout the Midwest.
