The Nebraska Repertory Theatre opens its season on Sept. 26 with David Javerbaum's "An Act of God."
The One with the first and last word on everything arrives in Lincoln to set the record straight in this laugh-out-loud comedy.
"An Act of God" will be guest directed by Michael Mendelson, a resident artist at Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland and founding artistic director of Portland Shakespeare Project.
Performances run Sept. 26-Oct. 14 in the Lied Center's Johnny Carson Theater.
"With 'Act of God,' we bring a new comedy to Lincoln—that took Broadway by storm," said Nebraska Repertory Theatre Artistic Director Andy Park.
The 2018-2019 season is titled "History Makers." Each show of the season explores a major moment in human history.
“Mother Courage and Her Children” by Bertolt Brecht and David Hare” opens Nov. 7 and runs through Nov. 18 in the Temple Building. Mother Courage tries to outwit her adversaries and profit off war in this epic masterpiece of struggle and survival.
"Our second play, 'Mother Courage,' is widely regarded as the greatest play of the 20th century," Park said. "It's epic and incredible."
The Holiday Cabaret, conceived and directed by Nebraska Repertory Theatre Artistic Director Andy Park, returns for four performances Dec. 13-16 in the Temple Building. This naughty and nice musical revue features holiday standards, a live band, comedy and a cash bar.
"It's our festive holiday offering that's both naughty and nice," Park said.
The season continues with “Dutchman” by Amiri Baraka. A conversation on a subway turns vicious as two passengers flirt with race and rage in Baraka’s Obie-award winning drama. Performances are Feb. 13-24 in the Temple Building.
"This play is a brilliant and relevant look at race and American culture," Park said.
The season concludes with “Hair,” with book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. The classic musical is back, and it’s overflowing with free love, buzzing with youthful energy, and pulsing with iconic rock anthems. Performances are March 27-April 7 in the Lied Center’s Johnny Carson Theater.
"The musical 'Hair' inspired a generation of activists, and it revolutionized musical theatre," Park said.
The state's only regional, professional theatre, the Nebraska Rep celebrates its 50th year this season.
On Saturday, April 20, 2019, the Rep presents “Spirit of ’68: Rep’s 50th Anniversary Party." This special celebration will feature hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a spectacle featuring live music, large-scale puppetry and stilt dancing. The event is free for Rep season ticket holders. Individual tickets for this event will be $19.68.
The Nebraska Repertory Theatre, affiliated with the professional Actors Equity Association, serves the region by producing critically acclaimed productions by both emerging and established playwrights and expands opportunities for audiences and students in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film to engage with professional artists over a nine-month season.
