What are some great books you’ve read lately? What is your favorite genre?

I am reading “It’s the Manager” by Jim Clifton and Jim Harter. It is about being a leader utilizing the Strengths Finder by Gallup. I just finished re-reading “Raising a Secure Child” by Hoffman, Cooper and Powell. My favorite genre must be non-fiction ;-] -Sammi Byrns

My reading lately has been more work related. I’ve been re-reading Pride and Prejudice. The plan is to borrow The Surrender Experiment from my daughter once she finishes it. -Paulette Sombke

I’m currently reading "Blink: the power of thinking without thinking" by Malcolm Gladwell, which is about how the human brain detects things subconsciously and makes decisions at an intuitive level far before our conscious minds detect it. Then the conscious mind (pre frontal cortex) creates a reason why we made that decision (post hoc) and we act as though we came to a reasoned/logical conclusion while instead we actually already made the decision and are just looking for a reason why.

They show this with several studies. In one study, there is a reaction in the nervous system that you can detect that simulates when you’ve gathered enough data to know what the answer is. Without fail, that detection happens before participants explicitly say that they’ve come to a conclusion, but it always happens when a decision is about to be made.

tldr: you make decisions subconsciously and figure out/make an excuse why via your thinking/PFC brain.

PS; I haven’t read books for fun since before grad school, so I’m not a good candidate for this. -Matt Carlson
