You may ask yourself besides host the ice cream social, what does the council do?
The council is a way for staff in the college to connect with the Dean’s Office and each other to study and discuss problems, situations, and opportunities that directly relate to our jobs. We offer recommendations to the Dean regarding issues that pertain to staff in the college, and we interact with others in the college to strengthen the college as a whole. We also offer activities in order to meet other staff members and find out about professional development opportunities for college staff.
The Staff Council will allow you to network with colleagues and meet others that you would not ordinarily have a chance to do so. Our activities are designed to be fun and engaging, and allow us to be a more cohesive voice in the college.
We meet once a month and try to plan 2 to 3 activities per semester. In the last couple years on Staff Council, we’ve: 1) had a voice with the Dean about ideas to support staff development, College identity, and diversity throughout the College; 2) toured various university facilities; 3) had several staff development opportunities, and the list goes on. If being involved in planning and organizing those types of projects appeals to you, contact us. Of if you have ideas of your own on how to improve Staff Council, we’d love to hear them!
Additionally, we are recruiting new members for the subcommittees, which devise and organize all the activities for the Staff Council. There are no restrictions as to the amount of time you’ve been in this College, and we love having a wide variety of people on the subcommittees to mix up the ideas! The subcommittees are: Professional Development, Networking & Event Planning, Staff Recognition, and Communications.
