National Quilting Day is Saturday

National Quilting Day will be held at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free public event features lectures, demonstrations, gallery tours and more.

Throughout the day, visitors will be able to take a behind-the-scenes look at how IQSCM employees and volunteers care for the world-class collection of more than 4,500 quilts and related items. On display in the Quilt House galleries are three major exhibitions, including “Reflections of the Exotic East in American Quilts,” “Signature Cloths” and Covering the War: American Quilts in Times of War.”

There will also be special displays of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s annual employee quilt show, Crazy Quilts and Quilts of Valor during National Quilting Day. Quilts of Valor are awarded to past and present service members to honor their military commitment. At 2 p.m., local Quilts of Valor volunteers will present a quilt made by Laura Lenzen to a Vietnam War veteran.

The following lectures will also be offered throughout the day:
“The Digital Quilt” by Leah Sorensen-Hayes at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
“War & Piecing” by Jonathan Gregory at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
“Memories Made T-Shirt Quilts” by Carolyn Garner at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
“The Story of My Signature Quilt” by Wanda Hein at 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Now in its sixth year at Quilt House, this event is available for free thanks to the contributions of AccuQuilt, Aurifil, HandiQuilter, Lincoln Quilters Guild and Nebraska State Quilt Guild.
