Anne Thomas, a lecturer in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, was selected as the October Boss of the Month by the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (NCDHH).
Thomas, who completed her doctorate in educational studies with an emphasis in special education at Nebraska last spring, currently coordinates the Deaf Education program at the university. In that role, she also teaches courses focused on preparing professionals to work effectively with students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
“I was totally surprised to receive this award,” Thomas said. “I feel truly honored to be recognized by such an important organization.”
Thomas has been active in the NCDHH for nearly one year after being invited to be a member of the Education Task Force Committee, whose goal is to identify challenges and opportunities needed to improve education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the state of Nebraska. She currently serves on the Best Practices Inside and Outside of the Classroom subcommittee, whose purpose is to identify current best practices within the field of Deaf Education.
Prior to joining the faculty at Nebraska in August 2016, Thomas worked as a teacher of the deaf for middle and elementary school students in both Virginia and Pennsylvania. She earned her master’s degree in special education with a specialization in deaf and hard of hearing students from the University of Pittsburgh.
