Loukia Sarroub, professor in teaching, learning and teacher education, will present a keynote message at the International Conference of Teaching and Education, Oct. 23-29, at the University of Tanjungpura in Pontianak, Indonesia.

Loukia Sarroub, professor and graduate programs chair in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education (TLTE), will be a keynote speaker at the 2nd International Conference of Teaching and Education (ICoTE), October 23-29, at the University of Tanjungpura in Pontianak, Indonesia. The conference theme is “Quality Improvement and Innovation in Education.”

Sarroub will present “Understanding the ‘Youth’ in Youth Literacies Across Home and School Settings” on Oct. 27. The presentation explores her research on how low socio-economic status (SES) students engage with different and multiple literacies across home and school settings. Her work examines teacher and student interaction related to multiple texts and discourses and the connections between SES and literacy in secondary school intervention reading classes.

While at the conference, Sarroub will also be fostering possible research connections, as well as study abroad opportunities for students in the College of Education and Human Sciences. TLTE Ph.D. alumnus Dwi Riyanti, a past winner of a University of Nebraska presidential graduate fellowship, is now a faculty member at the University of Tanjungpura. She and her colleagues are interested in future collaborative efforts connected to English language teaching, literacies in multilingual settings, and teacher education. While in Pontianak, also called Equator City, Sarroub will have the opportunity to visit elementary, middle and high schools and other educational and cultural settings.
