Second REACH Training Session

Second REACH Training Session
Second REACH Training Session

We are offering a second workshop on March 8, 2019.

Many of you have expressed concern and a need for more information in how to support students who may be impacted by mental health challenges. We recognize that developing an awareness of mental health issues, as well as warning signs is an important first step in helping our students get help. National statistics suggest that 75% of all mental health conditions begin before the age of 24, which is why college is such a critical time where mental health conditions are more likely to emerge. Other data collected by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State University (which included 139 institutions), found that 26% of students who sought help said they had intentionally hurt themselves, and 33.2% had considered suicide. While it is not our job to be therapists, it is important that we become more aware of the warning signs so we can appropriately help our students get help.

In order to facilitate this, the College has arranged a REACH training session for any faculty, Staff and Graduate Student interested in learning the risk factors, warning signs and how to intervene when students present with depression or potential suicidal ideation. This training is offered by the BIG RED Resilience & Well being. The session will be held on March 8th from 1:00-2:30 in room 205 of TEAC.

We are requesting that people RSVP for this event. This is the same workshop that we offered on January 11.

Later in Spring Semester we will also invite Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Jake Johnson, to share about the new initiatives and resources being developed by the University, including the new Behavioral Intervention Team model, and its accompanying reporting system.

I hope that all of you will make it a priority to attend.
