Many of the refugees who have been resettled in Lincoln in recent years were teachers in their home countries. Now, their classroom skills are idled. In a collaboration with UNL's Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education, Lincoln Literacy is about to launch a class that will help former teachers on the road to becoming educators here. In the 12-week pilot program, volunteer tutors -- all of whom have been teachers themselves -- will help the refugees prepare for a standardized exam that marks the first step down that road. Goodrich Middle School has kindly agreed to host the evening classes.
