On April 26, 2019, Dr. Gregory J. Gores will be visiting UNL to give a presentation entitled “How the Liver is Assaulted by Fat and Alcohol: Implications for Students, Health Professionals, and Researchers.” Dr. Gores is the current Executive Dean for Research, Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Physiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
Dr. Gores is a recipient of Distinguished Service Award from the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD). He is a basic Science Counselor for the American Gastroenterology Association Governing Board and promotes the translation of basic research into clinical practice. His lab established the mechanisms of liver cell lipoapoptosis ─ the high exposure of fatty acids to the liver ─ and demonstrated that the “Western Diet Animal Model” is responsible for progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is the most common liver disease in the world and its complications contribute to the need for liver transplantation. Dr. Gores has helped to unravel the fundamental cellular processes contributing to liver injury, from both fat and alcohol, and is now focusing on the mechanisms that will allow treatment for this deadly disease.
Dr. Gores lecture will be the beginning of a seminar series for the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, College of Education and Human Sciences. These lectures will be relevant to all programs within the department of Nutrition and Health sciences. Dr. Gores’s lecture is expected to have widespread audience from various departments in UNL like the Department of Animal Science, Department of Biochemistry and Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. This event is funded by the UNL Faculty Senate Convocations Committee and the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences. There will also be time available after the lecture to ask Dr. Gores questions.
