In National Institutes of Health (NIH) Notice NOT-OD-14-043 regarding the Federal Budget Continuing Resolution, information was also included noting the salary cap (limitation) had increased to $181,500 for 12 month appointments. This limit is tied to Executive Level II of the Federal Pay Scale. This increase was effective 1/12/14. Please use this new limit on all NIH proposals, as appropriate.

Reminder: The base maximum is lower for 9 month employees. Also, this base determines the rate, rather than the total amount that can be charged to a project for an individual’s salary.
• 12 month appointments - increase means the rate is capped using a $181,500, 12 month base salary
• 9 month appointments - increase means the rate is capped using a $136,125, 9 month base salary

If you have any questions on using this new rate in proposals, please work with your Grants Coordinator to clarify. Elijah Luebbe, Proposal Budget Coordinator, is also a great resource for budget assistance.
