UNMC Summer Undergraduate Research Programs Open November 1

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) invites undergraduate students to apply for its diverse summer research programs, opening November 1, 2025. These programs provide immersive, hands-on experiences across disciplines including biochemistry, cancer research, pediatrics, public health, neurological sciences, and more.

Participants gain mentorship from faculty, professional development opportunities, and stipends ranging from $3,000 to $6,000. The programs run full-time, 40 hours per week, for 10 weeks from June 1 to August 7, 2026. Students can work on projects spanning laboratory studies, clinical research, and community-based investigations, allowing them to explore their fields of interest in depth.

Program Highlights:

  • Neurological Sciences: Research on neurological disorders using molecular, cellular, and computational approaches, including mentorship and hands-on lab experience.
  • Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology: Explore infectious diseases, cancer, and clinical diagnostics with in vitro techniques, bioinformatics, and model organisms.
  • Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience: Gain lab experience, attend seminars, present findings, and potentially co-author publications.
  • Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer: Hands-on cancer research with faculty and weekly workshops on cancer biology.
  • Internal Medicine: Research across 12 divisions, from basic mechanisms to clinical studies, with mentorship and impactful projects.
  • College of Public Health: Work on laboratory, community, and clinical public health projects, with seminars and networking opportunities.
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology: Research on ovarian cancer, fertility, and reproductive health in a collaborative lab setting.
  • Surgery: Participate in clinical and biomedical research, including animal studies and specialized techniques.
  • Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI): Clinical-translational research on intellectual and developmental disabilities with mentorship.
  • Genetics, Cell Biology, and Anatomy: Projects in genomics, bioinformatics, and collaborative research in cutting-edge genetics and cell biology.
  • Child Health Research Institute: Focused on improving children’s health through biomedical, clinical, and community research.
  • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology: Hands-on cancer research with daily faculty mentorship, seminars, and a poster session.
  • Internal Medicine – Biomedical Alcohol Research: Contribute to projects studying alcohol’s effects on health and cellular function.
  • Cellular Integrative Physiology: Research on cardiac, vascular, and renal physiology with mentorship and a SURP poster presentation.
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences: Explore drug discovery, delivery systems, and pharmacodynamics in biomedical and clinical research.
  • MD/PhD Scholars Program: Learn to translate laboratory discoveries into clinical applications, with research presentations and networking opportunities.
