The Malone Community Center is celebrating the end of slavery with "Juneteenth"

Since its inception in 1979, the Malone Community Center's "Juneteenth Celebration" has become an annual Lincoln tradition and a real asset for citywide community engagement. Last year's Juneteenth attracted over 3,000 attendees of all ages and ethnicities.
The 2016 celebration will be Saturday, June 18, in Trago Park (22nd & U) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees will enjoy music, a health and human service resource fair, kids' corner activities and more - all free to the public.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration to commemorate the end of the slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union Soldiers landed in Galveston, TX, with the news that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were now free - two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. All 50 states and several other countries now hold annual Juneteenth celebrations.
More than 75 volunteers are needed during this event, in areas of food service, concessions, kid's activities, set-up/tear-down and more. All shifts are just two hours except for 3-hour set-up on Friday afternoon, June 17. (Volunteers under age 18 must have parental permission.)
To register for a shift, visit http://www.malonecenter.org and click on the link to sign up. You may also call/email the Malone Center volunteer coordinator, Jayme John at jayme@malonecenter.org or (402)474-1110 for assistance.
As we get closer to June 18th, we will provide details about volunteer check-in and more. Please invite family and friends to register and volunteer with you, and thank you for helping ensure another successful Juneteenth celebration!
