In this class, we will study female characters from classical Mythology in depth, including female goddesses, women in The Odyssey, Medea, Jocasta, and Antigone. We will read secondary scholarship focusing on feminist interpretations of the myths, and will also study modern creative adaptations of classical myths, including Madeline Miller’s novel Circe which reimagines myths from the perspective of Circe, and Natalie Haynes’ novel The Children of Jocasta. Additionally, we will study representations of female mythological characters in the visual arts across media. As a capstone to our study of women in Classical mythology, each student will produce an original creative project highlighting the agency of female mythological characters. This class can be applied towards the 300-level credit hour requirements for the Classics/ Classical Languages major options.
