In this course we will explore Roman religion within its historical and cultural contexts. Through study of a variety of literary and material evidence, ranging from historical texts to ancient curse tablets and calendars, we will investigate the distinctive features of Roman religion and its rituals. Topics for discussion include Roman deities, priests and priestesses, the calendar and holidays, sacred spaces, ancient magic, and ritual practices such as sacrifice, funerary ritual, and augury. We will consider the roles that gender, social status, and cultural diversity played in Roman religious life. We will contextualize our study of Roman religion with the plurality of religions in the ancient Mediterranean through discussion of Judaism,
Christianity, and mystery religions in the Roman world.
