Course Spotlight: CLAS/HIST-317-001 The Roman Empire

This course will examine the rise and fall of the Roman empire. We will study the unique personalities and leadership styles of Roman emperors, comparing the ways in which they shaped Roman history and culture. Topics for discussion include Julius Caesar and his military campaigns, Augustus’ transformation of the city of Rome and Roman religion, corruption and intrigue during the reign of Tiberius, madness of the emperor Caligula, murders and conspiracies during the reign of Nero, inspiring Roman women including the Vestal Virgins, and Constantine’s support for Christianity. Additionally, we will examine the internal and external tensions that gradually led to the decline of the Roman empire. While learning about major historical events, we will also explore various aspects of Roman cultural and social history. Topics for discussion include material culture (including buildings and inscriptions), politics, social status, gender roles, religion, warfare, conspiracy, and ancient spectacles such as gladiatorial combat. Students will have opportunities to study topics that interest them in depth through individual research and creative projects.
