This course provides an introduction to the reading of Latin prose through study of some of the “greatest hits” of Latin literature. While reading a broad selection of Latin texts, we will consider how Roman literature evolved along with the changing culture and politics of the city. We will read selections from a variety of Latin prose authors (including Cicero, Livy, Seneca, and Tacitus) as well as Latin inscriptions. Highlights include the founding of Rome by Romulus and Remus, brave and accomplished women, the Gracchi brothers and their fight against the establishment, Sulla’s reign of terror,
Cicero’s gripping political speeches, Catiline’s conspiracy, the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, and the age of Augustus.
