In memorium: Grenville Yuill, first Durham School director and longtime professor

Grenville Yuill, the first director of The Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction and a professor of architectural engineering, died Jan. 17 at his home in New Mexico. He was 83.

Yuill has been affiliated with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1998, when he came from Pennsylvania State University to help in the creation of Nebraska’s new architectural engineering program. In 2005, he was appointed interim director of the newly created Durham School and was installed as director in August 2007.

In 2009, Yuill resigned that position and returned to teaching. He retired from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011.

Yuill was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1937. He later won the Athlone Fellowship to the London School of Economics and Birmingham University, and became a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Manitoba at age 24.

In 1974, he started a company that focused on energy efficiency, solar energy and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. Yuill was also a past chairman of the Solar Energy Society of Canada.

Yuill was a Fellow/Life Member of ASHRAE and known for his HVAC work. This included multiple research projects with his son David, professor of architectural engineering in The Durham School.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Draper, four children and two stepchildren, six grandchildren, and a brother.

A celebration of his life will be held post-pandemic.
