The PI for the National Science Foundation-funded Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA) initiative is seeking suggestions from faculty and other colleagues on critical areas the nation’s engineering community should focus on to help raise the country’s well-being and competitive advantage. Think of challenges larger than any one research group, institution, discipline, or sector can manage.
ERVA visioning events gather engineers and subject matter experts from allied disciplines who come together to formulate long-reaching strategic focus areas for our nation to address society’s biggest challenges. These cross-sector, multi-disciplinary event reports identify research needs leading to action on a national scale and impact the field for years to come.
Faculty are invited to take this opportunity to influence the future research landscape and nationalize engineering research needs on topics relevant to you.
Suggestions on fundamental, pre-competitive research to solve a societal need are eligible for a fully funded ERVA visioning event, in which the idea originator can be considered for the event chair and authorship of a funded white paper.
The ERVA leadership bases their selection on whether the suggested areas are:
• Ripe for broad multidisciplinary engineering research intervention.
• Emerging, nascent, and currently under-resourced.
• Capable of significant societal impact (if resourced).
The Open Call for Visioning Event suggestions form (see link below) will take 20 minutes to complete. I invite you both to submit your ideas for visioning themes and share this open call with colleagues. ERVA evaluates on a rolling basis, but priority will be given to suggestions proposed by July 1, 2024.
