Register by Tuesday for ORI’s Women in Science luncheon on Nov. 20

As part of Nebraska Research Days, the Office of Research and Innovation and the Association for Women in Science are hosting a Nov. 20 luncheon – from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Nebraska East Union, Great Plains Room – to celebrate women in science and their impact. Register (link below) by close of business Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The lunch will feature a keynote address from Susan A. Martinis, vice chancellor for research and innovation at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Martinis, also the Stephen G. Sligar Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, will present “GO BIG: A Career Journey of Leadership in STEM,” which will draw on her diverse experiences as a woman in science. Martinis has thrived in multiple roles across her career, including as a researcher in the private sector and academia, an educator and an academic administrator. Early in her career, Martinis contributed to work on antimicrobial and antifungal drugs developed by biotechnology startups that were eventually acquired by Merck and Pfizer. In academia, she received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Houston’s most prestigious teaching accolade, as well as research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. And as an administrator, Martinis has been at the forefront of advancing public-private-governmental partnerships to address the rising costs of research.

During her talk, Martinis will describe the leadership philosophy underlying these successes and offer advice to help other scientists maximize their potential. We look forward to seeing you at the event.
