The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has reappointed Lance C. Pérez, interim dean of the College of Engineering, to a second term on the Committee on Opportunities in Science (COOS).
Members of COOS advise the AAAS Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) Programs on initiatives and projects related to enhancing the status and accelerating the advancement of minorities, women, and persons with disabilities in the sciences and engineering and advise on AAAS careers-related activities.

College of Engineering alumnus Norman Newhouse was one of nine alumni featured for Masters Week Nov. 1-3, sponsored by the Nebraska Alumni Association, Nebraska Student Alumni Association and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor's Office.
Newhouse is vice president of technology at Hexagon-Lincoln. He directs technology development that has allowed the company to increase sales six-fold during the past decade. The company makes filament-wound composite pressure vessels. In addition, he directed a program that led to the production of the world's largest all-composite commercial pressure vessel.

Jeyam Subbiah, professor of biological systems engineering, recently delivered the keynote speech, "Trends in Food Processing Technologies for Improving Food Safety," at a food science conference in Yangling, China.
On the way to the conference, Subbiah stopped at China Agricultural University in Beijing to give a talk on radio frequency processing and to explore collaborations and recruit graduate students. The conference, Yangling International Agri-Science Forum, was co-organized by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University.

Derek Heeren, assistant professor of biological systems engineering, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at South Dakota State University in October. The award is given to two alumni each year in recognition of significant contributions to society and accomplishments that have brought credit to the department.

Biological Systems Engineering graduate students Meetpal Kukal, Olufemi Abimbola, Aaron Engel and John Evans IV received awards at the Distinguished Fellowships and Awards Luncheon held by the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources on Nov. 6 in the Nebraska East Union.
* Kukal received the Hardin Distinguished Graduate Fellowship and is advised by Suat Irmak.
* Abimbola received the Widaman Distinguished Graduate Assistant and is advised by Aaron Mittelstet.
* Engel, advised by Greg Bashford, and Evans, advised by Santosh Pitla, both received the Milton E. Mohr Fellowship.
Irmak presented the BSE awards as the unit administrator.
