ACHIEVEMENTS: Professorships, service awards, fellowships

Engineering faculty Carrick Detwiler and Clarence Waters are among the six University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty chosen to receive named and university professorships from the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor during a celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Waters was honored as Aaron Douglas Professor of Architectural Engineering, and Detwiler was honored as Rosowski Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering.

Laurie Prettyman, administrative coordinator in electrical and computer engineering, was chosen as one of two University of Nebraska-Lincoln office support employees to receive the 2018-19 Floyd S. Oldt Silver Pen Awards at an award luncheon on Nov. 13. The award has been given annually since the 1987-88 academic year and is awarded to employees “who have demonstrated superior performance while employed at UNL and who have made significant contributions to the University community.”

Dan Linzell, associate dean for graduate and international programs and professor of civil engineering, has been named a fellow of ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), which drives the practical application of cutting-edge research by improving coordination and understanding between academia and practicing engineers.

Yi Qian, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow. With this honor, Qian is recognized for contributions to wireless communication networks and smart grid communication architecture.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of 1 of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.
