The College of Engineering brought home 10 UNL Parents Association 2019 Parents' Recognition Awards that were presented Friday, March 1 at the association's annual banquet.

The Parents' Recognition Award recognizes faculty and staff who have made a significant difference in the lives of students. The Parents Association solicits nominations through an annual mailing, asking parents to nominate a faculty or staff member.

Honored faculty and staff presented with certificates of recognition were: Matthew Barrows, Yuris Dzenis, Bruce Fisher, George Gogos, Michael Hoffman, John Hudgens, Jayde McWilliams, Kayla Person, Suzette Person and Karen Stelling.

Four researchers from the College of Engineering have been honored for their contributions to a research paper, “Internet of Underground Things in Precision Agriculture: Architecture and Technology Aspect,” which has been cited as one of the Top 10 Most Downloaded Articles by Ad Hoc Networks Journal. The paper was co-authored by Mehmet Can Vuran, associate professor of computer science and engineering, Rigoberto Wong, graduate student in computer science and engineering, Abdul Salam, a doctoral graduate in computer science and engineering, and Suat Irmak, professor of biological systems engineering.

Chungwook Sim, assistant professor of civil engineering, earned the 2019 UNO Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award for the College of Engineering.

Shannon Bartelt-Hunt, professor of civil engineering, is received one of three pilot awards given to University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty from the Great Plains IDeA-Clinical and Translational Resarch Network. Bartelt-Hunt is investigating how to improve water testing for private wells.
