New Othmer Hall video wall prompts interest

The new Othmer Hall entrance video wall.

We finished the installation of the videowall in Othmer late Thursday (8/22). This FAQ might answer some of the questions you have.

1. Why does it stick out so far?

The ground support framework is temporary. The vendor received the pieces for the wall earlier in the week. By using ground support we could squeeze in the installation between NUBE and the start of the school year. The final plan for the lobby adds a platform in front of the wall to highlight the work of student clubs and our research teams. At that time the video screens will be moved back and mounted on the wall, then trimmed for a finished look.

2. What's with the square?

Using a square aspect ratio met two goals: first, the wall conforms with the format used in most social media. Our videowall will serve our students and visitors as a backdrop for a number of social applications; second, using a square allowed us to fill the space with the largest screen possible while also meeting building codes.

3. How's this different from our digital signage?

The purpose of our digital signage is to provide news and information about speakers, gatherings, clubs and important deadlines. The videowall in the Othmer lobby highlights our work, passion, grit and glory.

4. Why isn't there any sound?

We need to be sensitive to those teaching in Othmer. There was a concern audio could disturb learning. However, we are looking at several directional speaker systems (think those found in museums) which would allow audio near the wall, but not disrupt the classrooms.
