NUtech Ventures is hosting a free webinar at noon on Thursday, Feb. 11, titled "Inventorship 101: Who is (and is not) an inventor?" It is open to all Nebraska researchers. A Zoom link will be emailed to all who register by 9 am the morning of the webinar.

Guest speaker Karthika Perumal, partner at Womble Bond Dickinson law firm, will discuss the statutory basis of inventorship, the court decisions shaping this body of law, and what acts are insufficient to be an inventor.

Why does inventorship matter?

Not all authors of a scientific article are considered inventors on a patent that contains content from the article. It is critical to understand the legal term "inventor" compared to the subjective term "author." Improper naming of patent inventors can jeopardize patent ownership. It can also be construed as fraud, rendering a patent invalid and unenforceable.

If you are new to intellectual property or would like a refresher, you're invited to watch our introductory webinar or visit the United States Patent & Trademark website to learn more.
