CSE's Hong Jiang, Willa Cather Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, has been named an IEEE Fellow.
The IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for advancing technology for humanity. It is also a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.
Professor Jiang is being recognized for contributions to computer memory hierarchy and storage systems. His contributions in the storage systems in particular, with innovative and effective mechanisms for data reduction and filtering, have direct impact on addressing some of the challenges presented by Big Data, a phenomenon where everyday 2.5 quintillion (2.5x1018, or 2.5 million trillion) bytes of digital data are created and data produced in the last two years alone amount to 90% of the data in the world today.
He has been on the faculty of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1991, where he is a Willa Cather Professor and directs the Abacus Distributed Storage Lab (ADSL).
His contributions cited by IEEE are a result of research conducted in ADSL at UNL and international collaborations with colleagues in China and Canada. He is currently on leave from UNL, serving as a Program Director at National Science Foundation. Professor Jiang expressed his sincere gratitude to the support provided by the CSE Department, UNL, National Science Foundation and his international collaborators at HUST that made his contributions possible.
