The University of Washington is hosting the 2015 Jelinek Summer Workshop on Speech and Language Technology (JSALT) in cooperation with the Johns Hopkins Center for Speech and Language Processing. They are now seeking juniors to join a summer research workshop on language engineering from June 22 to August 14, 2015.
The eight-week workshop promises to be intellectually intense, with the juniors working alongside more senior researchers as part of a multi-university research team, which they have assembled to attack a problem of current interest.
The teams and topics for summer 2015 include:
* Far-field speech enhancement and recognition in mismatched settings
* Continuous wide-band machine translation
* Probabilistic transcription of languages with no native-language transcribers
The experience is geared to encourage students to pursue graduate study in human language technology.
The summer workshop provides:
* An opportunity to explore an exciting new area of research
* A two-week tutorial on current speech and language technology
* Mentoring by experienced researchers
* Participation in project planning activities
* Use of cloud computing services
* A $5,500 stipend and $2,800 towards per diem expenses
* Private furnished accommodation for the duration of the workshop
* Travel expenses to and from the workshop venue
Applications should be turned in by Friday, February 27, 2015. The applicant must provide the name and contact information of a faculty nominator, who will be asked to upload a recommendation by March 6, 2015.
