On January 26th, the CSE Colloquium series will host Dr. Tarek Abdelzaher, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He will present "Social Sensing: Challenges with Humans in the Loop," which will focus on the emergence of social sensing and the research challenges that it creates. There will be a reception at 3:30 p.m. in 348 Avery Hall. The lecture will begin at 4:00 p.m. in 115 Avery Hall.

Dr. Abdelzaher received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. He obtained his Ph.D. in quality of service adaptation in real-time systems from University of Michigan. He has authored/coauthored more than 150 publications in real-time computing, distributed systems, sensor networks, and control. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Real-Time Systems, and has served as Associate Editor for several other publications. Abdelzaher's research interests lie broadly in understanding and controlling performance and temporal properties of networked embedded and software systems in the face of increasing complexity, distribution, data dependencies, and degree of embedding in an external physical environment. He is a member of IEEE and ACM.
