2020 Who Wants to Be a Mathematician Championship

Are you looking for a chance to reward and showcase your best math students—and the chance to share the winning contestant's $10,000 award with your math department?

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is conducting Who Wants to Be a Mathematician for high school students in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. with a top prize of $5,000 for the winning student and $5,000 for the math department of that student's school. There is no fee to participate, and more than 5,000 students took part in the first qualifying round last year.

The online testing is made possible by DigitalEd, our technology sponsor.

*How to participate: Simply visit the instructor test site and complete the registration form. Then (in 1-2 days) you'll get a code from sup-port@digitaled.com that will allow you to enable your students to take the Round One qualifying test. You may want to whitelist digitaled.com so that the email does not get classified as spam.
• The first round qualifying test is multiple choice, and can be completed any time between September 9th and September 26th (closing at 5:00 p.m. Eastern).
• Entrants who score seven or higher in the first round will qualify for the second round, taking place October 4th-11th.
• The final rounds will take place on Saturday, January 18 in Denver, Colorado, as part of the Joint Mathematics Meetings.
• If you absolutely can't do the test online, we can send you a hard copy.
• See previous qualifying tests.
The test is a timed (15-minute), closed-book, no calculator (and no other electronic help) test. Past participants in the Who Wants to Be a Mathematician Championship are eligible to compete again.

*AoPS gift certificates: Each school that participates in qualifying will receive a code to obtain a $30 gift certificate from the Art of Problem Solving (AoPS), our Online Community Sponsor. The gift certificates are valid toward the purchase of any AoPS-published book or an enrollment in any AoPS online class, and expire at the end of the 2019-20 school year.

*Gifts to participating students: Wolfram Research is offering Wolfram Programming Lab, Wolfram|One, and Wolfram Alpha Pro to each participating student who successfully completes three challenges on the Wolfram website.

*Final rounds: After the second round of testing, the AMS will select 10 contestants from different regions of the US and one from Canada to compete in the 2020 championship contest in January in Denver. (The UK representative will be chosen separately following Round 2.)

*Reminder for under-13 contestants: Because of Federal law, contestants under the age of 13 must take the written test, not the online test, which we will email upon request.

*From past participants: "Thanks so much for this amazing opportunity and our school certainly appreciates the support, too!"

"Thanks so much for everything! The entire competition was an amazing experience that was unlike anything I've ever been a part of."
