In this Freakonomics podcast from Oct. 2, Steve Levitt wants to get rid of the “geometry sandwich” and instead have kids learn what they really need in the modern era: data fluency. http://freakonomics.com/podcast/math-curriculum/

In a follow-up on Oct. 23, the Los Angeles Times published an op-ed article that Jo Boaler wrote with Levitt, who is a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of “Freakonomics.” This article follows the Freakonomics podcast episode discussing maths on Oct. 2.

In the op-ed Steve and Jo argue for a radical rethink of the maths being taught in high school. Did you know that the algebra-geometry sequence our students take was designed in the 1800s? As they argue in the op-ed, the world has changed dramatically since then, but the math we teach in high schools has not.
